What we have noticed is that with the number of events postponing (corporate, wedding, coach travel etc.), some of the March – June Lodges that we recently postponed were a real struggle to find an alternative date due to other events wanting the same dates.
2021 is already filling up. With the possibility that Autumn events may also need to postpone this will only increase the number of events looking for 2021 dates. Early indications suggest venues will be open for business come September.
I believe this will cause two main issues. The first being the obvious lack of availability with conferences choosing to run over weekends, a year of weddings to deliver as well as 6 months+ of those postponed from 2020, an increase in people holidaying in this country all contribute to an increase in demand.
This leads onto the second issue and that is hotel prices. Prices will inevitably go up as hotels look to recoup their losses over this lengthy period of inaction. I genuinely believe this is where agencies such as Square Events are going to be ever more important in ensuring rates are competitive and contract terms realistic in the post COVID-19 world.
The difficulty will be trying to not only negotiate best possible rate in a market where we’re competing with other events for the same dates but we’ll also be expecting improved contracts with greater flexibility on numbers and protection in case of any secondary spike.
